Post Bellum

Post Bellum is a civic association that promotes and protects human rights and democracy through activities inspired by so-called European memory. Since 2011 it has been recording in Slovakia the recollections of witnesses to key moments of modern Slovak history. It documents and collects the memories of witnesses to important historical events that have been unjustly forgotten, and passes them on.

The association’s aim is to collect and publish concrete human stories, which are the best way to understand one’s own past. As part of its work, it organises educational and experiential workshops for pupils and students and helps children and young people learn the history of their own nation and thus be able to engage with differing views on how society should function.

Since 2015 the association has been running unique full-day workshops at primary and secondary schools throughout Slovakia, as well as educational formats entitled Príbehy našich susedov (Stories of Our Neighbours), Kinopríbehy (Cinema Stories) and Divadlo pamäti národa (Theatre of the Nation’s Memory).

The association created the online educational platform Puzzle pamäti národa (Puzzle of the Nation’s Memory) and organises the conference SLOBODNÍ ŠTUDENTI #FOREVER (FREE STUDENTS #FOREVER); its activities also include outdoor and indoor exhibitions and public fundraising collections for Veterans Day, and it systematically informs the public about its work through its publications. Members of the association created the discussion programme Sloboda nie je happy end (Freedom Is Not a Happy Ending), the podcast Príbehy 20. storočia (Stories of the 20th Century) and the memorial Stopami ukrývaných detí (In the Footsteps of Hidden Children).
