Four figures receive the Region’s Anton Srholec Freedom Award

The Trnava Self-Governing Region conferred the Anton Srholec Freedom Award for the third time. The award went to four individuals for their exceptional contributions to the protection of human rights and to strengthening democracy and the rule of law, as well as for acts of civic courage.

The ceremony was held to mark the anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. The event included light and sound installations on the buildings of public institutions in Trnava — the theatre, the library and others.

The laureates were Michal Lošonský, writer and editor at Radio Free Europe; László Öllös, university lecturer and political scientist; and Martin Korčok, director of the Holocaust Museum in Sereď. The award in memoriam was conferred on Hedviga Rozborová for her courage during the communist totalitarian regime.

Previous laureates of the award include Milan Kňažko and Helena Woleková. The award bears the name of Anton Srholec, who was imprisoned for attempting to cross the Morava River, forced to work in the uranium mines and, after 1989, helped homeless people.
